Event Icon Shakespeare – Henry VI Part Two

25 Feb, 2019 @ 7:00 pm

Australia/Melbourne Timezone

Alex Theatre, 135 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda Arrow

On the last Monday of every month, February through November for the next four years (beginning in 2018), every single one of the 40 plays attributed to William Shakespeare will be read in full at the Alex Theatre’s St Kilda, in chronological order through his entire career, from The Two Gentlemen of Verona to The Two Noble Kinsmen. Ever-reliable warhorses such as Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream will sit alongside rarely seen works like King John and Henry VIII, with his several collaborations with other writers, including Edward III and Sir Thomas More, will also be read.

The project has been conceived and will be coordinated, by actor and director David Meadows, a veteran of dozens of independent Shakespeare productions around Australia and internationally. David is a WAAPA graduate with several Hamlets, Iagos, and Petruccios to his name, as well as a Shylock, a Macbeth, and a Mercutio, and directing credits as far afield as Mexico. He is a former Fellow at Shakespeare’s Globe in London and is to date the only actor in the world to have mounted an online recital of the complete sonnets, which remains a free resource on YouTube.

“Like my sonnet project on YouTube, I want to provide everyone who is passionate about Shakespeare’s contribution to theatre, and literature, and humanity, frankly, with the opportunity to have experienced at least one performance of every single one of the 40 plays that bear his name, and since fully staged productions are often not financially feasible in this day and age, giving full readings of them all seems to me to be an elegant way to split the difference.” David Meadows, 2018.

“I will tell you the beginning, and if it please your ladyships, you may see the end, for the best is yet to do” As You Like It, 2/5

The adventure begins on Monday 27 August 2018 with The Two Gentlemen of Verona, followed by The Taming of the Shrew (using cue scripts) on Monday 24 September, Henry VI Part One on Monday 29 October, and Henry VI Part Two on Monday 26 November; after a two-month break over the festive season, the New Year will see the Wars of the Roses come to an end, with Henry VI Part Three on February 25 and Richard III on Monday 25 March 2019.

The 2019 readings will boast some of Shakespeare’s earliest blockbusters successes.

Come and enjoy a free evening listening to the works of Shakespeare.

DIRECTED BY: presented in association with Vass Productions, the international Actors Ensemble and Circle in the Sand.
